Gotland Carbon Solutions
Gotland Carbon Solutions contributes to the acceleration in the transition towards fossil-free shipping. Building on the progress already made in reducing emissions from the Gotland service, we convert these achievements into contributions to the EU climate targets.
The initiative is a part of Gotlandsbolaget’s long-term strategy with phasing out fossil fuels from our operations and accelerating our role as leading player with the climate transition.
Two of the vessels operating in the Gotland service are fitted with modern dual-fuel engines, which make it possible to run on nearly 100% fossil-free fuels in terms of bioLNG. This enables us to finance a higher share of liquefied biogas in our operations under the FuelEU Maritime regulation.
The regulation makes it possible for shipowners with vessels built for fossil-free operation to trade CO2e emission reductions through pooling. Actors with a surplus of reductions can make them available to vessels in deficit, supporting their compliance with FuelEU Maritime. This creates economic incentives to increase the use of sustainable fuels across the maritime sector. As demand grows, production and availability of fossil-free fuels can expand over time.
Through Gotland Carbon Solutions, we offer partners the opportunity to tap into our emission reductions which enables us to further increase the share of fossil-free fuels within our own fleet. In this way, we contribute not only to our own decarbonization but to the climate ambition of the European shipping industry.

About FuelEU Maritime
FuelEU Maritime is an EU regulation designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from shipping by replacing fossil energy with renewable and low-carbon fuels. Vessels entering EU ports must gradually cut their emissions from 2% in 2025 to 80% by 2050.
Compliance can be achieved either by lowering a vessel’s own emissions or by acquiring someone else’s surplus emission reductions. In this way, FuelEU Maritime promotes energy efficiency and drives a long-term shift towards a more sustainable European maritime sector.
